{"id":2683,"date":"2016-11-01T16:45:48","date_gmt":"2016-11-01T23:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pascual.co\/ActiveE\/?p=2683"},"modified":"2016-11-01T16:45:48","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T23:45:48","slug":"bolt-ev-meet-and-ride-event-with-octeslaclub-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pascual.co\/ActiveE\/other-electric-cars\/bolt-ev-meet-and-ride-event-with-octeslaclub-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Bolt EV &#8211; Meet and Ride EVent with @OCTeslaClub owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/news\/what-tesla-owners-think-about-chevrolet-bolt\/\">Motor Trend was interested in gauging Tesla owner feedback on a just released Chevy Bolt EV\u00a0<\/a>article they just published. \u00a0A few weeks prior to this EVent, Motor Trend, along with other members of the automotive media <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/cars\/chevrolet\/bolt-ev\/2017\/2017-chevrolet-bolt-ev-range-test-review\/\">got a chance to take the Chevy Bolt EV on some impressive long distance driving from Monterey to Santa Barbara along PCH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the organizers of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Orange-County-Tesla-Club\/\">Tesla Owners Club of Orange County<\/a>, I know a LOT of local Tesla owners and membership interest is a mix between those that enjoy Tesla for all the Eco and Green things and those that enjoy it for all the performance things and some for the luxury things. \u00a0It&#8217;s a mixed bag, but members range the gamut from either or all of these interests. \u00a0So, with short notice, I sent a note for our members on a Thursday to see how many would be interested in possibly\u00a0seeing and riding\u00a0in the Chevy Bolt EV in exchange for\u00a0being interviewed by\u00a0Motor Trend for their opinion on the car.<\/p>\n<p>We got a few &#8220;takers&#8221;, including this writer. \u00a0(A chance to check out a new EV that can go 236 miles on a full charge? No way am I turning THAT down.)<\/p>\n<p>So, a few things we learned of the crowd that was there. \u00a0Most were Tesla owners and had reservations for a Model 3. \u00a0There was one person that joined us who is an i3 (with REX) owner who also had\u00a0two\u00a0Model 3 reservations. \u00a0Of the Tesla owners, we had mostly Model S owners, one Model X owner, and several Roadster owners.<\/p>\n<p>So, how does it look? \u00a0Here it is among some classic Model S<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_103958\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29821551011\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c4.staticflickr.com\/9\/8316\/29821551011_731d153e41_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_103958\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>And a nice Roadster joined the party. \u00a0Our Model X member was here early and took off before we can get the picture.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_1202.JPG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29927416715\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c4.staticflickr.com\/9\/8463\/29927416715_daf0d3f746_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1202.JPG\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I have a bias for Tesla and most things Tesla. \u00a0However, I root for all EVs, but we&#8217;ve put our money behind Tesla. \u00a0Both as a customer as well and\u00a0an investor. \u00a0I believe in what Tesla stands for and as much as it pains me that Elon has stated that he would like to see more EVs, even if it means that Tesla stock takes a hit.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_103147\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29869651846\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c7.staticflickr.com\/6\/5303\/29869651846_f9da8335fd_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_103147\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Well, the Chevy Bolt EV is a good swing at Tesla and the Model 3. \u00a0It&#8217;s a solid car. using the seatbelts.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_120748\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29821694501\/in\/album-72157670307259780\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c6.staticflickr.com\/9\/8211\/29821694501_d0b556b7be_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_120748\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m guessing she&#8217;s the only baby to have taken a ride in the Bolt EV at this time.<\/p>\n<p>So the key to the Chevy Bolt EV looks like a regular key, not nearly as playful as Tesla&#8217;s &#8220;car shaped keys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_103243\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29277491144\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8291\/29277491144_960d67b67e_b.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_103243\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The interior of the car isn&#8217;t what I would call luxurious, but it definitely is functional and solid. \u00a0And for those that want to run a CD or even a cassette deck in the car, you can. \u00a0There is an AUX port in the one delivered for the testers. \u00a0(Yes, this is a concern. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/model3ownersclub.com\/threads\/listening-to-a-cd-in-a-tesla-whats-possible.986\/\">Check out this thread on Model3Ownersclub.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_103248\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29277496454\/in\/photolist-LB9PFC\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c7.staticflickr.com\/9\/8539\/29277496454_dbcd851bac_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_103248\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The trim level that was brought out was the higher trim level and I wonder what one loses with the lower trim level. \u00a0At the same time, I wonder how much higher than the $37,495 base trim price this one is. \u00a0The front of the Bolt EV is pretty comfortable. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think that the seats were leather, they were probably &#8220;leatherette&#8221;, not sure if they&#8217;re vegan friendly though.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_103231\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29278391993\/in\/photolist-LBepTX\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5804\/29278391993_5053fa55ee_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_103231\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The controls and displays in the Bolt EV is a mix of modern and traditional. \u00a0The infotainment display is slightly larger than the Leaf SV or\u00a0SL (Acenta or Tekna in the UK), I believe. \u00a0And there are many traditional controls for many of the functions. \u00a0One thing missing is a built-in GPS and navigation controls. \u00a0The vehicle uses the Apple and Google solutions (Carplay and Auto) to project the latest smartphone&#8217;s offering to the display rather than use one independent of your mobile device. \u00a0So, keep those phones current, charged, and in those ecosystems. \u00a0This is not the first time I&#8217;ve experienced this behavior. \u00a0It seems that my sister&#8217;s new Volkswagen E-Golf does the same thing. Considering your author&#8217;s primary mobile device is a Blackberry, this is not a preferred method of navigation for my vehicles. \u00a0I do carry an oft-photographed older iPhone, but I don&#8217;t believe that is CarPlay compatible.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3387\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29869498736\/in\/album-72157670307259780\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8476\/29869498736_47d252d5f0_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3387\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The driver&#8217;s front display is similar to the Model S in that it is also just a big screen.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3388\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29610276990\/in\/album-72157670307259780\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c7.staticflickr.com\/6\/5002\/29610276990_9774c5aa10_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3388\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>On this view from the driver&#8217;s seat, you can see that rated miles for the driver and what the car estimates is your current range. \u00a0This is a function of both the driver&#8217;s style and current conditions and the charge on the battery. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember how many miles of driving conditions it uses to predict for remaining range. \u00a0As I&#8217;ve experienced in many other EVs, the manufacturers algorithms can improve with each iteration and the more one drives the car, the better this algorithm is at predicting its own range.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_105747\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29821618231\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c8.staticflickr.com\/9\/8114\/29821618231_3233361f96_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_105747\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve grown to like the touchscreen controls on the S, but there is something to be said about physical buttons. \u00a0Remember, I still carry a Blackberry. \u00a0&#x1f632;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3389\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29610277580\/in\/album-72157670307259780\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c5.staticflickr.com\/9\/8018\/29610277580_178ca6ea50_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3389\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Here is the infotainment screen on the car.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_105750\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29790858352\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/8\/7574\/29790858352_3267d83320_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_105750\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Your shifter.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3390\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29278155133\/in\/photolist-LBdcua-iiRyBx-bWqupt\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c6.staticflickr.com\/9\/8420\/29278155133_d3ee9245df_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3390\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A regular sized glove compartment. \u00a0With no gloves (I wonder how many people actually carry gloves in their glove compartments?) (Sheldon Cooper of Big Bang Theory doesn&#8217;t count anymore as is evidenced by recent episodes in 2016.)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3391\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29790599292\/in\/album-72157670307259780\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c5.staticflickr.com\/9\/8148\/29790599292_f38d65d4b8_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3391\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>There doesn&#8217;t seem to be much space in the trunk, so it&#8217;s good that the car is a hatchback. \u00a0Another thing that people looking at Model 3&#8217;s had an issue with originally. (<a href=\"http:\/\/pascual.co\/ActiveE\/2016\/04\/whats-the-big-deal-with-the-model-3-trunk-boot\/\">Size of the trunk\/that it&#8217;s not a hatchback<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3362\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29821258961\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5014\/29821258961_c7e931f5bf_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3362\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>However, like the Active E or Model S, the Bolt EV has a shelf underneath the rear floor. \u00a0That&#8217;s a good place to carry cables and adapters. \u00a0Something that is more critical for ex-North American market. \u00a0In North America, we&#8217;ve standardized on J1772 for public Level 2 charging and the cables are attached to public chargers. \u00a0In other parts of the globe, the charging posts have outlets that the EV driver has to use their own cables to attach to and the standards are not nearly as defined. \u00a0So, a European driving the Opel Amper-E (their version of the Bolt EV) will need to have a different L2 cable depending on the outlet that they&#8217;re plugging into.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_3396\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29278160913\/in\/album-72157670307259780\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c2.staticflickr.com\/6\/5092\/29278160913_5789c194d7_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3396\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pretty solid build. Not one of the Tesla owners that had a Model 3 reservation raised our hand. The i3 owner, who has two Model 3 reservations, might consider cancelling one of his reservations and his reason was because he likes hatchbacks and the <a href=\"http:\/\/pascual.co\/ActiveE\/2016\/04\/whats-the-big-deal-with-the-model-3-trunk-boot\/\">Model 3, as it was announced, does not have a hatchback and instead has a controversial trunk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a picture of most of the members that\u00a0attended this pop-up <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/octeslaclub\">Orange County Tesla<\/a> EVent.  We have several Roadster and Model S owners in this shot. \u00a0But, it&#8217;s really better to compare the size of the Bolt EV to a BMW i3. \u00a0It was good to get a BMW i3 owner to come out and join us on this event as those two cars really look about the same size.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_20160924_121107\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8245538@N06\/29869869336\/in\/datetaken\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/6\/5462\/29869869336_d581dd1400_c.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160924_121107\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>However, I always feel like I&#8217;m &#8220;riding high&#8221;
